I think I got my first underage beer at the Wursthaus. It’s cool because it was German beer. Also, my mom was there and she was horrified. The Wursthaus was a staple in harvard square for several generations, and the authentic german food was pretty okay! Das Haus was located at 4 jfk street (formerly boylston street) in harvard square and served the cambridge and harvard community from 1917-1996. It was known for its authentic german cuisine, particularly its brats and sausages and other hearty fare. The restaurant was a popular spot among locals and tourists, known for its cozy atmosphere and delicious food.

Over the establishments many years, the wursthaus became more than just a place to grab a meal; it became a cultural landmark in the square. Its cozy interior, adorned with bavarian decor and german memorabilia, created an atmosphere reminiscent of a old german beer hall. The restaurant's friendly staff and welcoming ambiance added to its appeal, making it a hub for students, business types and visitors.

The wursthaus was owned by “the unofficial mayor” of cambridge, frank cardullo. Cardullo also ran the gourmet food store which still bears his name today. Over its 80 years, the wursthaus saw many distinguished patrons including: harvard president derek bok who spent time there while in law school as well as while serving as president. Secretary of labor robert b. Reich and the aga khan were also patrons. There were plenty of Hasty Pudding winners that popped in as well. As business at the wursthaus slowed significantly in the 1990s the wursthaus closed. Today, the russell house tavern now operate in the former location of the wursthaus.
