Dewey Cheetam & Howe Harvard Square T-Shirt - Car Talk NPR
The Dewey, Cheetham & Howe sign can be seen in a third-floor window of the Abbott Building at 5 John F. Kennedy Street, at the corner of JFK and Brattle Streets in Harvard Square, Cambridge, MA. The window once marked the offices of Car Talk, the NPR radio show hosted by Tom and Ray Magliozzi, also known as Click and Clack, the Tappet Brothers. The fictional law firm’s name was placed in the window as part of their “Car Talk Plaza” headquarters and has remained a quirky landmark of the square.
On Car Talk, Tom and Ray mixed car advice with running jokes and wordplay. One of their longest-lasting gags was claiming to work at “Dewey, Cheetham & Howe,” a pun on shady law firms that became part of the show’s personality. The window sign tied the radio humor directly to a visible spot in Harvard Square.
Both brothers were graduates of the nearby Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Before the show’s national success, they operated a garage in Cambridge in the 1970s and 1980s. The Harvard Square office became their symbolic headquarters, and the Dewey, Cheetham & Howe sign still looks out over the square today.
